Researchers have demonstrated a hybrid quantum-classical AI workflow that improves the discovery of immune-targeting peptides, which are important for vaccines, immunotherapies, and other precision medicines.
The approach uses quantum-generated latent representations alongside classical AI models to design peptides that bind to human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecules. The biggest gains came for rare or understudied HLA variants, where conventional AI struggles because there is limited training data. The hybrid model generated more high-quality candidate peptides, and several were validated experimentally in the lab.
The research suggests quantum computing’s near-term value may lie in enhancing AI, rather than replacing classical computing, particularly in data-sparse scientific problems like drug discovery and personalised medicine.
This is a practical example of quantum computing delivering value today; not by solving an entire pharmaceutical pipeline, but by improving AI’s ability to identify promising therapeutic candidates where data is scarce, potentially accelerating the development of more personalised treatments.

Two Executive Orders signed this week, one commits to building a quantum computer powerful enough for real scientific discovery by 2028. The other mandates federal agencies migrate to post-quantum cryptography by 2030, with hard deadlines and named accountability. Also, big things happening in Boston, MA this week, with the Quantum.Tech World summit seeing 1000+ innovators, […]
