McKinsey’s 2026 Quantum Technology Monitor: The Industry Has Reached a Commercial Tipping Point

McKinsey’s latest Quantum Technology Monitor suggests that quantum computing is moving decisively beyond the experimental phase and towards commercial adoption.

The report highlights several significant developments:

🔹 300+ companies are now actively engaging with quantum computing, with leading organisations moving from pilots towards applications embedded in real business workflows.

🔹 $12.6 billion was invested in quantum technology start-ups in 2025, 6.3x higher than in 2024.

🔹 One-third of companies surveyed spent more than $10 million on quantum initiatives in 2025.

🔹 Quantum computing could create $1.3 trillion to $2.7 trillion in economic value by 2035 across industries.

🔹 The global quantum technology market could reach $60–100 billion by 2035, with quantum computing accounting for a significant proportion.

One of the report’s most important observations is the changing nature of commercialisation. The conversation is shifting from whether quantum computing will work to when and how it can be integrated into existing systems.

McKinsey identifies hybrid computing, combining quantum with classical computing and AI, as a particularly credible route to near-term value. At the same time, companies are increasingly investing in the talent, infrastructure and capabilities needed to move beyond experimentation.

For investors and businesses, this points to a market that is becoming increasingly commercial, competitive and capital intensive.
